Day 12: Entering Utah

Today we entered Utah, the third state on our trip. The ride was 117 miles, but we had the wind generally behind us throughout the day which made the ride fast. During the ride, my right hamstring started bothering me. By the time we got into Utah, it was rather painful. Fortunately, at that point the tailwinds were strong, the road was mostly downhill, and the scenery was beautiful which helped me finish the day.

As the two photos above show, the scenery in Arizona was quite interesting. Odd jutting rock formations dotted the landscape.

In addition to having the sign welcoming us to Utah, we also had this burro,

Here are several of my fellow bikers as we head into Monument Valley in Utah. The red rocks jutting up from the plains surround us in all directions. Below are a couple more examples.

Tomorrow we have another century with over 6,000' of climbing. I will be biking slowly to minimize the strain on my hamstring. This post will actually show up tomorrow, because there is essentially no internet in the tiny town of Mexican Hat where we are staying tonight.
