XC Day 2 - Milwaukee to Holland MI
Today we took a ferry from Milwaukee across Lake Michigan to Muskegon MI. This made the day rather different from a typical day, especially since the ferry did not depart Milwaukee until 12:30pm.
We had a short 3 mile ride to the ferry terminal. Because the ferry trip is two and a half hours long, we all carried small bags on our backs with things for the trip such as lunch and extra layers of clothes.
Here we are waiting in the terminal before boarding the ferry.
As bicyclist, we were the first to board so that we could store our bikes on racks along the interior wall of the ferry.
The ferry was a high speed catamaran. We travelled around 35 mph across the lake.
Here we are entering the Muskegon bay, which is quite large, via this small channel.
The entrance to the channel has this red lighthouse.
Once we got unloaded, we started the 37 mile ride to Holland. At this point, it was about 4:30 in the afternoon. We travelled south, sometimes near various inland waterways, but generally on suburban streets.
Here is a photo of my fellow riders for today.
For most of the ride, there was not a much interesting to take photographs of. Here was a house in one of the towns we passed through that I photographed just to be sure that I had at least a couple of images from the ride for today’s blog.
Finally, as we biked further away from Muskegon, we got the occasional scenic view when the route touched an inland waterway.
Here is another such view.
Tomorrow we have a 92 miles ride southeast to Marshall MI.
