Day 8: East on US 66

Today was a tough day for navigation: leave the hotel in Kingman, bike 84 miles east on US 66, stop at our hotel in Seligman.

Over the past couple of days, we have been gaining elevation. Here in Seligman, we are now at over 5000' of elevation. As we have moved from the Mojave desert into the high desert here in Arizona, the weather has been cooler. Also, there is more rain here (including a 10 minute dumping today), so there is more greenery.

Running along much of route 66 are rail tracks which are in frequent use. As I type this, I can hear a train rumbling by across the road.

The landscape shows lots of striation.

The flat tops of mesas are increasingly common.

There are many places where the wind and rain have cut through the landscape of sandstone leaving interesting shapes.

Black Eyed Susans have been very common along the side of the road.

Periodically, we pass by elements from bygone days such as this truck and rig.

Today was the first day that my legs felt a bit tired. Hopefully, I will get a good night's sleep here at the Historic Route 66 Motel. Tomorrow we ride 95 miles to the Grand Canyon where we will spend two nights, Saturday will be the first of our four rest days on this trip.
