Day 22: Over Halfway
It is hard to believe, but I have biked over 1800 miles since Santa Barbara. We now have just over 1600 miles more to pedal before completing the trip to Myrtle Beach.
Today, when I woke up, my legs felt sore and tired. I confess to being rather unexcited about biking the 113 miles to Enid. A cold front had come through about an hour before we started. The temperature was around 50, which does not sound to bad, but the air was damp and the wind was blowing at over 20 mph, so it felt much colder. We have been getting very lucky with the wind in Oklahoma. Today, the wind was out of the northwest. Most of the day we were heading due east, so the wind was generally helping us.
We had an eleven mile section of road which headed due north. Fighting the wind for this leg was tough, but the scenery was quite different from the plains we have ridden through so far in Oklahoma.
Looking at this photo, I would be much more likely to guess its location as someplace farther west.
This photo reminds me a bit of the striping we saw before entering Mexican Hat AZ.
I was stopped by my first train on the trip. I arrived at the crossing just as the two locomotives were crossing the road. One big difference between here and out west is the number of locomotives. Most trains we saw out west had at least four, but the plains are so flat that only two were needed here despite the train being over a hundred cars of double stacked containers.
Tomorrow we ride just 71 miles, generally southeast, to Stillwater. With the winds continuing out of the northwest, it should be a relatively short and easy day although it will be chilly. The current forecast is showing 36 degrees tomorrow morning with a high around 50.
