Day 31: Across the Mississippi
Today we rode across the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, ending the day in Puducah Kentucky. At the end of the point on the left of this photo is where these two rivers merge.
The day started with 30 miles of mostly back roads through farm country.
Grain silos were a common sight today.
At just over 30 miles, we came to the bridge across the Mississippi.
I was surprised at how excited I felt to be crossing the Mississippi. Besides its huge expanse, there was the sanctification of knowing we had biked about 2500 miles to get here.
Our crossing point was just upstream of where the Mississippi and Ohio merge. So almost immediately we were crossing the Ohio river. However, what this meant was that for the half mile or so between the bridges, we were in the very southern tip of Illinois (our 9th state).
The Ohio river is an equally impressive river.
Upon crossing the Ohio River, we entered Kentucky (our 10th state).
The remainder of the ride to Puducah was on back roads through Kentucky farmlands.
We have now ridden over 2500 miles and have a bit under 900 miles to bike. Tomorrow we ride into Tennessee. After that, just North Carolina and South Carolina to go.
