Day 40: Just One More Day
Today's 92 mile ride from Columbia SC to Lake City was our second to last day. We now have just 77 miles to Myrtle Beach. While my right calf was not terrific today, it will certainly not keep me from completing this wonderful journey from the Pacific to the Atlantic tomorrow.
This morning, we had to get out of Columbia which was not much fun, then we ended up on some major roads such as this for a while. Overall, the ride up to lunch was not great.
After lunch, we were on much quieter and more scenic routes.
We had not seen cotton fields since southern Missouri, but they were common this afternoon.
Here was a stand of trees which seemed to be dying from some disease or infestation. For the moment, while the tops of the trees are still alive, its colors are very interesting.
One aspect of the south is the presence of churches everywhere: old and new, small and big, traditional and modern, ... The two churches above caught my eye as I rode past.
Here is one final image of some beautiful and very tall grasses. I would estimate that these stood 7' to 10' tall.
This has been a fabulous trip, but I am very excited to be finishing tomorrow.
