XC Day 10 - Corning NY to Cazenovia NT
Today’s 100 mile ride took us through the towns at the base of two of New York’s Finger Lakes, traveling through Watkins Glenn on Seneca Lake and Ithaca on Cayuga Lake. The photo above is looking down one of the gorges in Ithaca. In May of this year, Jesse, Ruth, our friend Doug and his wife Trish, Kate and I rented a house on Seneca Lake. Jesse, Ruth, Doug and I rode around each of these lakes, so some of the roads today were ones that we had ridden on in May.
Today started off a bit warmer than yesterday, but the air was heavy with moisture. Off and on during the day, we would get periods of mist, but it never really turned into rain. I am very glad not to have experienced the deluge that hit New York City today.
Nonetheless, I think just looking at these photos, it is almost possible to feel the dampness.
Here is one photo I took while it was misting. This also shows the style of riding today, lots of ups and downs.
While the previous photo was down, I spent much more time on the ups. I am slow on the climbs and fast on the descents.
We worked our way through Ithaca. I liked this red house at the base of the road leading up and out of Ithaca.
Here was a cemetery we passed as we climbed up and out of town..
I started today’s blog with a photo looking down a gorge above Ithaca. This is the corresponding photo looking up the gorge.
The scenery today was simply wonderful and highly varied.
Another lovely view.
We are entering Halloween season, so the pumpkins are making appearances.
Of course, I can’t have a blog post without a multiple barn photos, so here is a second.
I saw this young deer in front of me by the side of the road. I stopped the bike and slowly got out my camera. As I brought the camera up, the deer darted across the road, but I was able to snap this shot. I have seen other deer on this trip, but never had a chance to get the camera out.
I just liked this tree as I rode along, so I snapped this photo.
One of the efforts Jesse and I made today was searching for cider donuts. I stopped at three farm stands, but was only able to find cider, but no cider donuts.
One of the things I love about bicycling in the northeast is the constant variation of the scenery. Here is a simple wooded back road going up a slight hill with gentle curves with leaves are starting to accumulate on the sides. It reminds me of biking near home.
While we see lots of cows biking in the northeast, I have rarely seen longhorn cattle.
Tomorrow is a rest day. I am very much looking forward to the chance to let my legs recover. During the last half of today’s ride, my legs were really suffering. Fortunately, the views were so great, I could easily distract myself by looking around and pretending that my body ended at my belly button.
